Using a series of reference photos, the power and fury of a heavy ocean swell crashing is created. The painting process for this work started by standing witness to a heavy swell crashing into a rocky coastline. A favourite place of mine to witness this, is the Mount Maunganui base track. And that is where this paintings story begins.

From several photo references and vivid memory and imagination the painting evolves. First, very loose, expressive brush marks establish the composition of the work. Next, colour and tone are established, and the composition and swell lines are cemented in place - up until now the painting is subject to dramatic changes, always trying to create the feeling of movement and in this case the power of the sea.

Once the form is set, the modelling of the sea begins. Using several layers of paint and glaze the translucence of the sea develops. Heavy oil paint applied with loose brush work creates a texture to highlights and sea foam. The initial movement of the ocean transcends to the movement of paint across the canvas. The photographs, the memory, but mostly the random characteristics of oil paint create the representation of pure nature.
